The sewer line is being installed in order to meet the demands of the growing campus, including the new Campus Center building. According to construction manager Ron Viola, there was no problem with the original sewer line; however the college saw the building of the student center as an opportunity to make the system more efficient.
The north and southbound lanes on College Way are being alternately shut down during the installation, with flaggers to guide drivers around. From May 5-10, Loop Rd. off of College Way will be partially closed and traffic will be directed through parking lot C, the snakelike lot.
This has resulted in minor delays for some students, but access to parking will always be available.
"Parking will not be affected, just the access to the parking lots will be via an alternate route for some people," said Viola.
The COCC Web site suggests that students who wish to access the parking lots by Cascades and Pioneer Halls and the library enter via Mt. Washington Dr. in order to keep traffic running smoothly. It also asks that students needing to access all other areas of campus enter from the south, via Newport Ave. or Portland Ave.
When construction first began on the roads, some students such as Angelina Reynoso were caught off guard.
“On the first days (of the sewer line installation) I wasn’t expecting it, so I got a little bit delayed,” said Reynoso, adding that she is used to the traffic now and hasn’t had more problems.
When asked if students should expect serious delays from any of this construction work, Viola said, "Sure, but it will be minimal as long as they take the right road. It's a detour."
