Michael Pohyar, clubs coordinator for Associated Students of Central Oregon Community College, has resigned.

On April 18 a recall petition began circulating on Central Oregon Community College campus for Pohyar.  The following week Pohyar was absent from ASCOCC meetings, including the monthly student life meeting for clubs, and the weekly Friday ASCOCC meeting.

During that Friday meeting on April 25, Gordon Price, director of student life and advisor for ASCOCC, informed Garrett Galvin, public relations officer, Victoria Newlin, budget coordinator, and Brenda Pierce, events coordinator, of Pohyar’s resignation.

According to Price, Pohyar called in the morning of April 25 and informed Price that he was stepping down from ASCOCC.

Pohyar does not plan on returning to COCC in the fall.

According to Pierce, they were not given a reason for Pohyar’s resignation, only that he would be retrieving his things from the ASCOCC office located in Grandview 103 on Monday, April 28.

Come Monday, however, Pohyar had not come to gather his things, instead Pohyar told ASCOCC that he had not resigned.

Pohyar instead chose to put in his notice for leaving on Friday, May 2 and attended his last ASCOCC meeting.

Neither Pierce nor Galvin were surprised by Pohyar’s quitting.

“It was the responsible thing for him to do,” Pierce said.

The reaction on campus depends on the student, Galvin said, and he couldn’t guess what that might be.

“He has supporters and he also has people who wanted to recall [him],” Pierce added

The reason on record for Pohyar’s resignation is that he felt he needed to focus more attention on school.

Michael Pohyar’s interview

ASCOCC plans to replace Pohyar in order to maintain a majority vote on matters voted by ASCOCC.

The plan is to promote an honorary member, though they don’t know yet if they’ll promote by vote or interview.

Pierce, Galvin, and Caleb have been voted into next’s years ASCOCC government.
